TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - A family has been awarded $4 million by a jury in connection with a malpractice suit against Banner University Medical Center.

The Mercaldo Law Firm said a sponge was left in a patient’s abdomen during a c-section at the hospital.

Mercaldo said it “led to severe complications and prolonged suffering for the woman.

“Our client courageously pursued justice, seeking accountability for both physical injuries and emotional distress caused by this preventable error,” the law firm said in a release. “The legal team at Mercaldo Law Firm meticulously presented the evidence, demonstrating the clear negligence of the medical staff involved in the procedure and the full extent of the injuries they caused.”

Mercaldo said although Banner admitted to leaving the sponge, but disputed it caused the patient’s problems.
